How To Shop Smart I Spring Edition

fashionspace

Hello everyone!

Springtime inspired me to purge my closet (I’ll be sharing more about that in a future post) to make more room. And guess what? I could fling open the closet door and experience a breeze of fresh air wafting out, and all without a mountain of fabric avalanching on my face. Okay, that’s a little exaggerated, but you get the gist!

And with that extra room, I wanted to do a bit of smart shopping to start off 2015, which is pretty much the following formula: shopping affordably + appropriately to the season. 599fashion wanted to help me reach my goal, and so I’m here to share with you a few items they sent over! I love how they offer so many options for clothing, accessories, lifestyle, etc… AND did you know they boast an extended line to include items for men+women+children – any creative last minute ideas for Mother’s or Father’s day, anyone? ;).

Let me show you my little haul with 599fashion.com! I’ll leave you a rundown of the details (shipping, thoughts on quality, etc) after the images. Let me know your thoughts!

Hello, hello!

So today, I’m featuring the Zara laser cutout heels that I’ve been showing for the past few posts, haha.

I thrifted the patterned sweatshirt (What’s the pattern called? Not houndstooth, but something similar…) and…

I wanted something not too crazy to clash with the top today, so I paired it with this statement necklace from Windsor.

The gleam from the stones adds some visual interest, but the fact that it’s in the same color palette as the sweatshirt helps it hang as a subtle piece.

0905141414~2

To keep this office-friendly, I paired it with a black pencil skirt from J. Crew (thrifted!) and the heels! 🙂

0905141411a

The pattern makes me so dizzy but deliriously happy inside, haha. I love the coziness of the knit, but do y’all understand when your accessory/a sharp corner of a desk gets caught in the yarn and unravels a part of it? Merp.

To toe!

All ten of them, in fact. 😀

Have a lovely day!

25 Items to Pack | Wedding, Bridesmaids

Wedding

IMG_1780

So today, I thought I would take a few moments to go over a few key pieces every bridesmaid should have the day of the wedding!

My Credentials? Not much, but I have been a bridesmaid twice and figure I can share what I learned from those instances!

Remember, these are all secondary to you being there for the bride. It’s a day of celebration, so be a support and soak it in!

So here it is…

THE LIST:

1. Shoes.

I don’t know what the bride-to-be told you, but make sure to pick out the pair of heels/flats/sandals to her specifications! For both of mine, I was asked to wear nude footwear, and I complied with this great pair from Target! So affordable, and looks great in photos 🙂 The only downside is that they’re fake suede and got scuffed up pretty easily, but I’m okay with that. I think it adds character.

2. Fashion tape.

Alterations are all nice, as are custom made dresses, but there will still be that moment when you try on a dress (or someone else in the bridal party does) and finds to their chagrin that something doesn’t fit quite right. It might be the bust area. It might be the length of the dress. It might be a little gap between the fabric and the skin. Always carry some fashion tape for that “oops!” moment. And stop it before it happens. I’m all about prevention, here haha.

IMG_1781

3. The Dress.

You know, the one that you’ve been waiting to arrive and crossing your fingers that everything would fit right. That the color would at least match your skin tone isn’t asking too much, right?? This cute mint dress was from Etsy and custom made for every bridesmaid. Just don’t forget to bring the dress the day of the wedding because…. well, people are going to notice if you’re in a pair of sweats and a button down!

4.Speaking of which… the Button down.

Why is this necessary? Wear it so that when the makeup artist (whether it’s you or someone else) is working on you, you don’t get makeup stains on “the Dress” that is going to be photographed for days on end. And because it has buttons, it’s easy to slip out of and into the dress afterwards without your pretty face smearing all the laboriously-placed makeup on the non-button down shirt you could have been wearing!

5. Flats/sandals.

These are crucial throughout the wedding! I wore mine to the location where we were getting ready, which was nice – you know, pampering my feet before they would be standing in heels before hundreds of people for about an hour (and more at the reception!). But I also wore them on the walks to the different locations where the bridal party/groomsmen went to take photos. This is a lifesaver when you have to walk on cobblestones! And the flats are super cute and a no-brainer to slip into after the reception if you’re staying to help clean up!

IMG_1785

And onto the hairy end of things!

6. Hair straightener and curler.

Pretty standard – you can use the straightener to make your hair sleek and smooth, or do some wrist-turning and turn it into a hair curler! I love my Babyliss 1″ curling iron (in red) and it’s my second purchase now! GAWWWGEOUS, darling. No joke.

7. Round brush/teasing comb.

Always useful tools to have when you need a little extra oomph in your hair! Volume is always nice, hehe. Particularly useful for those with heavy or fine hair.

8. Bobby pins/small elastics.

Purchase these in the same color as your own hair so that they don’t present too much of a contrast in photos! I added a decorative floral piece if you wanted some for pizzazz and needed a little reminder 🙂

9. Headband.

Does anything need to be said? It can get a little annoying having that one stray hair keep tickling your face when you’re getting all done up. Don’t even let that happen!

IMG_1786

On to the beautification!

10. Face pre- primer.

I have Dr. Brandt’s pore refiner – it smells funky, but it literally makes your pores disappear and mattifies the skin. Amazing. Pricey, but amazing.

11. Face primer.

You can skip the pre-primer, but definitely use a primer! I have the L’oreal magic perfecting base, which has worked so well for me every time I purchase it.

IMG_1787

12. Foundation.

Sometimes, the makeup artist will have a few, but it’s always best to bring your own that you know matches your skin tone and lasts well through long periods of exposure. Here, I have pictured a foundation my mom gifted me because my grandma said it was good! Haha so we all have the same foundation, and I brought that.

13. Foundation/bronzer/blush/jack-of-all-trades brush.

Just in case.

14. Pressed translucent powder.

[Pictured in the middle] Sometimes, you need to touch up, and the E.L.F. is a great option (so affordable too!).

15. False eyelashes.

Ardelle’s 110 “Natural” lashes are classic! Easy to put on (speaking from the makeup artist’s perspective – I take forever and still can’t guarantee results) and instantly add some drama!

16. Eyeshadow primer.

This one here is from Urban Decay (gold tube and purple cap) and is in the shade “greed.” It’s a stunning soft gold shade, and is CRITICAL for ladies with a crease. Without it, my eyeshadow goes all over the place, but this ensures a snug fit with all of the layering and blending action going on.

17. Eyebrow pencil.

I look like the Mona Lisa without it. If you can say “aye” to that yourself, remember to bring a pencil/powder/wax/whatever floats your boat!

IMG_1788

18. Eye Makeup Remover.

Neutrogena’s product (blue bottle, gray cap) works wonders and is too simple to use. I remember using this for the foundation under one of my eyes, where it strangely turned an awkward texture and changed color. I have no idea what happened, but I kept calm and removed it, then added the foundation and powder on top where the bare spot was.

19. Q-tips.

For the makeup remover/touchups.

20. Body lotion.

To make sure you don’t have dry patches showing in photos. I packed the Fresh Body Lotion (sea salt, I believe? smells super good).

IMG_1789

21. Eyebrow gel.

To keep your revamped brows in place, in thick or thin, sweat or skin.

22. Mascara + Curler.

You know the drill. Va va VOOOOOOM.

23. Oil blotting sheets.

While I do like the affordable ones from Daiso, I believe nothing beats the Clean&Clear sheets for a special occasion. Yes, it’s gross to see all that oil change the color of the sheet, but hey, you know it’s coming off your face! 🙂 Definitely makes a HUGE difference when blotting. Highly recommended.

24. Floss.

Juuuust in case. You’ll thank me later.

25. A thankful heart!

Just remember all the good times you’ve had with the bride to be, the ways you’re thankful for her, the lovely memories to look forward to, and the life she can have with the person she commits to love for the rest of her life!

And I think we’re a go!

I packed all of these in a small luggage roller to ensure easy access and travel. So maybe that’s included in the list as well!

I hope you enjoyed and found this helpful!

Now go back out there and enjoy the day, stress-free and all prepared, to celebrate your friend’s big day!

Jess

Beauty on a Budget! DIY Deep – Cleaning Makeup Brushes

Beauty

IMG_2167

Hello there!

Today, we’re going to be environmentally conscious and economically savvy :).

ALL that in ADDITION to deep-cleaning your makeup brushes!

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

So let’s begin!

THE CAST OF CHARACTERS:

IMG_2189  IMG_2184

(top left) Shampoo (I used this one because I couldn’t find my baby shampoo. It works!)

(top right) An object higher in elevation than the brushes (It’ll make sense later)

(bottom left) An empty jar

(bottom right) Dirty brushes and a small towel

IMG_2182  IMG_2173

THE STEPS:

1.) Pump a quarter-size dollop of shampoo into the jar

2.) Pour in hot water from the faucet into the jar, stimulating the shampoo to bubble

You want just enough so that placing the brushes inside won’t cause a flood

3.) Place the brushes inside and let soak for a few seconds

4.) Swirl one brush at a time against the jar’s bottom to knock out makeup product

5.) Rinse the bristles quickly and set aside on the small towel

6.) Repeat until all brushes are squeaky clean

7.) Place the higher object in the center of the towel, then place the brushes with the handles leaning against the object so the bristles touch the towel

This makes sure no residual water stays in the brush handle and causes rusting/damage to the brush

8.) Wait to dry, then use the brushes to your heart’s content!

IMG_2165

I love how these few steps allow me to save time (washing) and money (shampoo), as well as water (because most of it is in the jar)!

If you’re more of a visual person than a person of “the written word,” feel free to click any of the pictures in this post and get directed to the video I created to communicate the deep-cleaning process.

Play some fun music and make this time fun! 🙂

IMG_2101

 Hello, there!

Did I successfully reel you in to this post?

Hehe.

Moving on!

So it was my birthday back in the summertime, and I thought I would share a few pics from that lovely day with my family!

We went to the beach (I love the beach!) and walked around…

IMG_2095

Yay! Love the simple contrast of white + anything else…

IMG_2091

AND COTTON CANDY!

IMG_2090

Oh, the good times of that day. And you get a little peek of the outfit!

IMG_2087

There we go! I wore a white tee + mint skirt + accented pattern/color block sandal.

SO comfy.

IMG_2084

Isn’t the “more to sea” so punny?

Totally up my alley.

IMG_2073

Scouted out random pretty areas as well.

You know, to burn off the sugar from all that cotton caaaaaandy 😀

I hope you have a great day, and thanks for stopping by!

Jess

Hello again, lovely people!

IMG_2054

Today I’m showcasing a few favorites that just joined #teamjess, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

IMG_2055

It was a fairly hot day (for me, at least) and I felt like going out to a yummy lunch of fish tacos (AKA Rubio’s).

Which means…

1.) I needed to wear something light enough so I wouldn’t melt into a puddle.

2.) I needed to wear something heavy enough so I wouldn’t freeze inside air conditioned buildings (something I am VERY thankful for!)

And this is what popped out at me!

(get it? because like… poppy print… popped out…? hehe)

I feel like I should go into the corny/punny making business sometime. Any suggestions? 😛

IMG_2068

I paired this plain white tee with a golden “bar” necklace from Nordstrom – it wasn’t even on sale, but it was such a steal at $10!

It makes my heart a little happier when I see something completely affordable that looks like it is worth a lot more.

Do you get what I mean?

IMG_2058

The bright orange-red poppy print spoke to me while I was shopping in Paris, and they said,

“We’re yours! And on sale! And fit (well, a little big, but nothing adding belt loops can’t fix!)!”

And they won. Woot!

IMG_2059

And to top off the whole look, I wore these AMAZING ZARA CUTOUT HEELS.

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

MRARRRRRR.

I’ve been wanting these heels for months now, ever since I saw them in store (in blue, but that’s less of a universal color, you know?).

And I admit, I would dream up outfits to wear them with, but didn’t ever purchase these beauties.

And then someone amazing did! 😀

And here they are on my feet 🙂

IMG_2066

This H&M purse I revealed in a recent haul so simple yet classic!

I love the shape.

IMG_2060

And another shot of the shoes because I adore.

IMG_2062

Like them sunnies from Betsy Johnson? So good for sun protection, and on a steep discount from TJMaxx!

And if you have a few extra moments to join me for a dance party, I just uploaded a Taylor Swift “Shake It Off” inspired tutorial!

Screen shot 2014-09-09 at 11.47.29 PM

Adios, and until next time!

[snapshotspace] Hello, Baby! OOTD

snapshotspace, Uncategorized

IMG_1918

Oh, hello again!

It’s going to be a little twist here on #helloblackbird in that we’re going to be featuring a BOY today!

Well, at the time this was taken, he wasn’t born yet, but we all were boy-oh-boy excited 🙂

So… if you didn’t gather in the last few sentences, I had the lovely privilege of attending a baby shower, and we all know how I can be a liiiiiiiitttle behind regarding the time frame between taking photos and posting them here!

<cough> He is born and thriving and handsome! </cough>

Nevertheless, here is a brief snapshot of my OOTD, with a cameo from a magical unicorn from that one movie. The one that was really funny. And cute.

IMG_1919

The statement necklace is from Windsor, and the classic navy shade has brought a lot of attention from passerby when I wear it! I love how it’s large and in charge, but at the same time doesn’t have to be bright neon or crazy huge to declare its presence. (Not that I don’t like those pieces. It just worked out this way for this outfit!)

The top is from Target, and I LOVE the cat print on this knit piece. It’s quirky and fun, and oh so comfortable! If you know me, you know that’s how I roll 🙂

Nevertheless, I need to make some space in my closet so I’m actually selling it on one of my favorite sites to browse, Threadflip.com! Stop by if you want to take a peek!

IMG_1920

Loving these navy shorts from Francesca’s! That store is pretty much my dream store. If I could create a boutique, I feel like I would just copy/paste that beautiful place with all the clever accessories and nicknacks over to my site, heh. Don’t you love the lace detailing on the pockets? I know that it’s pretty simple to add on yourself, so I could have just done it to a pair I owned, but nobody’s got time for that! That being going to the fabric store to pick out the specific lace, sewing, and figuring out how to use the rest of the lace.

Actually…

Hmmm………….

I digress.

And from here on out are a few photos I took from that special event! The ladies who made and put up this decor are quite talented, I must say (and I’m sure you’d agree!). Prepare yourself for some heartmelting content below.

Be advised.

You have been warned.

🙂

IMG_1925

GAH. SO CUTE.

IMG_1948

MUSTACHE straws?? Simple DIY with such massive changes in aesthetic!

IMG_1935

Plasticware cinched in to create a bow-tie effect. I love.

IMG_1934

The whole array 🙂

IMG_1932

My heart.

IMG_1930

No truer statement.

Well, that’s not true, but it’s pretty up there.

IMG_1929

Say it with me: D’awwwww!

IMG_1939

One of the activities we had was decorating stick-on bow ties/neck ties so that when he reaches that length of life (one month, two months, three months, etc), it’s easy to snap a photo and know exactly how old he is!

Brilliant.

IMG_1926

The photobooth that was so meticulously set up by an amazing woman I am blessed to know.

IMG_1924

Manly munchies on the table!

IMG_1923

The program that “tied” (hehe, get it? :D) the whole thing together.

I hope you enjoyed this edition, and have a lovely day!

Love,

Jess

[stylespace] One Day My Prints Will Come…

stylespace

IMG_1988

And they came!

Hehe oh, hello there!

So over the summer, I introduced  a few items to my wardrobe – and one of the stars of the new additions are these printed pants from Zara!

I showed them in a haul uploaded this past week – click here (or here or here or here) if you want to take a look at the rest of the new items!

Screen shot 2014-08-15 at 12.14.55 AM

It’s shopping vicariously… through me! 🙂

And without further ado, here are the pants!

IMG_1979

These are super simple to style, and I love the elaborate print combined with muted colors that make it a breeze to coordinate.

IMG_1984

On top I have my favorite statement necklace EVER. Seriously. Ever.

MRAHHH I love.

Paired it with a plain white tee from H&M and a thrifted mustard yellow cardigan!

On nails: Essie’s “show me the ring” – the champagne/frosty finish is a lovely complement to the ensemble, don’t you think?

IMG_1981

The pants came with the belt, which (obviously) matches quite well. I love how casual the outfit can be by simply switching the pants for jeans, or dressed up by switching the pants for a pencil skirt!

IMG_2004

BEAUTIFUL.

IMG_2007

And here I present to you the wilted hydrangea that I could have placed the necklace on for your viewing pleasure ;).

IMG_1995

Exhibit A: I thought the dotted pattern would make a cool backdrop, but didn’t consider that I was too short to make it all the way up there, heh.

IMG_1991

Look at that print!

IMG_1990

Oh, hello again!

IMG_1989

The day was lovely 🙂

IMG_1986

Did You Know? Sitting on bricks is quite… comfortable…

And makes for a thankful heart when there are comfy chairs to sink into later!

IMG_1985

Again with these gorgeous booties from Nordstrom Rack! Seriously living on my feet!

I hope you enjoyed this style snippet, and have a lovely day!

Love,

Jess

[snapshotspace] Nail Painting Time – Triple Threat Edition!

snapshotspace

Happy Tuesday!

A little while ago, I got to spend some good quality NPT (“nail painting time”) with godly, wonderful women!

Quite an ideal combination of fun and fellowship, I feel 🙂

So without further ado, here is a peek at all the shenanigans that went on that afternoon!

IMG_1963

Design Overview:

Left: An individual chevron-esque design outlined with black to make it pop more to the eye. I  wish I could have practiced more before attempting the look. But I’m thankful for a gracious friend who appreciated it nonetheless (I hope, hehe).

Middle: Essie’s “Sand Tropez” and “Mint Candy Apple” layered with Essie’s “Show Me The Ring” to add pearly dimension.

Right: Yellow nail polish with a French tip created using a gold marker, protected with a top coat.

IMG_1962

T’was a lovely afternoon, and I hope to be able to repeat it sometime again!

Jess

photo (1)

Hello there!

It’s a lovely Tuesday and I wanted to share a new way to work with the tribal cardigan I featured here!

It was such a beautiful day, perfect to break out my summer uniform of a white tee and jeans. 🙂

photo (2)

If you didn’t know, I’ve been absolutely adoring this statement necklace!

It’s “The One” if there ever was one for statement pieces, and so many people (friends and strangers alike)  on the street have told me they love it as well!

Kinda cool, kinda throws you off when you walk down the street not expecting to be stopped haha.

Mostly cool though. 🙂

photo (3)

Love love love the brown boots as well!

They’re so versatile, and I’ve been wearing them around aaaaall weekend.

I also showed them in this haul, if you want to stop by 🙂

photo (4)

Hehe a few unexpected photos were taken at this moment in time.

Me: “Hey! Are you taking pictures?”

Other: “he…he..he… :)”

I hope you enjoyed this style snack, and have a lovely day!
